FAQ

I have a special needs adult child and would love them to be in a home like this but can’t afford to buy one.  Can I still work with A Home of My Own?

Yes, there are other options for obtaining a house such as a bequest or by teaming up with other families. We can also help by matching your child with other families that have a house and are looking for roommates.

How can I find out more about A Home of My Own and how the homes work?

You can submit a contact request from this website to get started. Paul or Mary Ann will then call and set up a time when we can meet or let you know about an upcoming presentation.

If I know other families with the need for a home for their special needs adult child, can I team up with them to purchase a home that A Home of My Own will manage?

Yes, absolutely. We understand that purchasing a home is difficult for most families so if families can work together to make this more affordable that’s a great solution.

What happens to my loved one when I am gone or no longer able to help?

This is the primary reason that we founded A Home of My Own. The nonprofit works with the homes to ensure that the needs of the individuals in the home are met and that the home continues to function regardless of the ability for parents to be involved.

Do you mix male and female residents in the same home?

At this time we have made the decision to keep our homes to a single gender. This can help to avoid potential issues and makes staffing less complicated.

Will my family need to pay any money to cover monthly expenses?

No, with our process, the individuals pay rent that covers all of the costs that are not reimbursed by Self-Direction except food and personal expenses. The individuals can have food stamps to help cover food so in most cases, after rent is paid the remaining monthly income is available to the individual for whatever they want to spend it on.  In many cases, SDS will also provide a rent subsidy that will reduce the amount that the individual pays for rent.
